Hagrid's Hooks & Needles

We in Utah County are fortunate to share air with local master craftsman/woodturner Mike Mahoney. Mike knows trees! He and his wife Jenni are fabulous for so many reasons including the fact that they are living our dream! Here's Mike's website and his blog.

Mike recently gave us a lesson on turning our own crochet hooks and knitting needles out of beautiful trimmings from our box elder maple tree (otherwise known as Hagrid).
Since our lesson we've been industrious and have been putting the lathe to good use! Mike said the way to bring out the green wood's beauty is to handle it- the oil from your hands are the best patina. I've been carrying Hagrid's crochet hooks around everywhere I go just to hold them. They feel nice. O'lover has even taken up crocheting.
